Uganda is where you go to be within a few metres of a wild mountain gorilla. Around half the world's remaining population lives in the forests of the south-west, and Uganda's permit system makes them accessible — if you book far enough ahead. Add chimpanzees in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Ishasha and Murchison Falls, and eight days is well spent. Flights arrive at Entebbe (EBB).
Five days built around one extraordinary hour: tracking a habituated mountain gorilla family on foot through the dense forest of Bwindi, with a day of chimpanzee trekking alongside it. Gorilla permits are capped and sell out months in advance, especially June–September and December. Once you have dates, this is the first thing to lock in.
June–September and December–February are the drier windows, and the forest trails are far easier going. Trekking runs year-round regardless.
Anywhere from one to six hours through steep, muddy forest at 1,500–2,500m. Reasonable fitness is enough; porters are available and worth taking.
